Welcome to the Motor House. We are a multiuse venue providing state-of-the-art performance space, studios, and offices for artists, designers, and cultural organizations.
The Motor House is home to a state-of-the-art performance space with flexible seating for up to 175 people. Interested in booking a show or renting the space for your private event? Visit our Performance Space page.
A core tenet of the Motor House's mission is providing sustainable workspace for practicing artists. Our second floor studios range in size from our 150 square foot micros studios to our larger, 900 square foot studios, and provide working space in the heart of the Station North Arts & Entertainment District for more than 18 individual artists and collectives.
Motor House is built out to meets our tenants needs while encouraging collaboration.
Motor House is not only a space to house inspiring artists and organizations, but a space that inspires anyone who enters.
Located directly behind the Motor House, Graffiti Alley is made and re-made by graffiti artists on a near daily basis. For years, writers have contributed to this constantly changing outdoor space, and Graffiti Alley has served as a backdrop for photos and video shoots, as well as an informal event and meeting space for creatives of varying disciplines from across the city.

Contemporary Ballet Class w/ Vaught Contemporary Ballet

Mar. 20, Mar. 27, Apr. 3, Apr. 10, Apr. 17

This class is for adults with at least two years of experience. The beginning of each class will focus on alignment and basic ballet technique taught with a moving warm-up series. We will learn to use technique as a base from which we build an increased freedom of movement.

The second half of class will feature a new phrase of choreography each week. Students will explore their own movement style.

Attire:
Please wear whatever is comfortable and allows for a large range of movement. Form fitting clothes are encouraged as they allow the instructor to see the body’s alignment and offer corrections aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of one’s body. Ballet shoes or socks are suggested but not required.Vaught Contemporary Ballet presents a six-week contemporary ballet open session. Vaught Contemporary Ballet was founded in January 2015 by Katie Vaught. The company debuted its concert-length work “Water” at Artscape 2015 and has performed at Baltimore Theatre Project’s, Open Marley Night and Joy of Motion’s, Dance Project.

You can pay in person at the box office at time of class.

$14 for drop-in rate or $75 for all classes

Artist Statement:

History is subjective; there are many blurred lines and so much distortion.  Context and point of view are very important. One person’s hero is another person’s villain…it depends on who tells the story.  As a gay Mexican-American I have always felt excluded and under-represented by history.  By using a historical context as a backdrop for my work, I can reweave these “lessons” of the past. My work is an attempt to make our already complicated history even more complicated. The more layers that I present, the closer I can get to something that might resemble truth.

I am combining imagery from ancient Mexican codices with popular culture references such as Wonder Woman, Oreo cookies and the Lisa Frank canon to create a new, queer world that speaks to the future as well as our past.

Throughout my work are themes of identity; I am interested in challenging traditional ideas of race and sexual orientation.  I feel compelled to make thoughtful and beautiful work that confronts societal assumptions and gives new insight into our human experience.  My artwork addresses a personal quest for heroism and bravery as well as a need to define my place in the world.
