Hear Our Stories: Celebrating Black Victim-Survivors
January 31 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Co sponsored by: MOMCares and Nzuri Malkia Birth Collective
Come out for an evening of food, fellowship, reflection+discussion, and amazing performances all in the name of what: Hearing our stories and Celebrating Black Victim-Survivors!
From the media, popular culture, laws, and even religious institutions there is often little to no public support for the well-being and livelihood of Black victim-survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and abuse. This is particularly true for Black women, girls, and gender non-conforming folks. In recent public cases such as R. Kelly’s, even when the most gruesome and horrific public stories of harm are shared; the public still questions the validity, purpose, and truthfulness of the victim-survivors reality.
Stand with FORCE as we shift that narrative. We believe and support Black victim-survivors. We understand that your needs are complex and interconnected. And especially in this moment, we need to take time to celebrate the very people that society often forgets. Share! Share! Share! And don’t miss this important event.
At this event, you will be invited to kick off FORCE’s Love Letters for Survivors for this year, for Marquita Sutton. Marquita Sutton is the loving mother of six-year-old boy named Jax, who would like to be known as “Bat Jax.” Ms. Sutton is a woman of God and believes that God has blessed her with a caring heart and a desire to give back to others. Ms. Sutton was convicted of second degree murder and is currently serving a 10 year sentence for taking her abusive husband’s life, after years of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual abuse. Despite these tragic experiences, Ms. Sutton knows that, “God gives us beauty from ashes,” and no matter what journey life takes you on, strength, restoration, mercy, and grace can be found in abundance. After her release, Ms. Sutton plans to pursue a degree in hospitality management. Ms. Sutton also hopes to mentor young girls and women who have experienced domestic violence. Join us to send our love to Marquita for Valentine’s Day.
